Zhou carries the meaning of "dense" or "meticulous." In ancient scripts, the character is composed of the elements "Yong" (用 - to use/govern) and "Kou" (口 - mouth/opening). Its original meaning refers to "encircling" or "communicating." The character resembles a system of water wells and channels flowing into one another, forming a connected waterway.
The surname is primarily rooted in the royal lineage of the Zhou Dynasty:
The Migration to Zhouyuan: Houji (the son of Emperor Ku) was originally enfeoffed in Tai. Generations later, his descendant Gugong Danfu (known as King Tai of Zhou), under pressure from the Di and Yi tribes, led his people to settle at the foot of Mount Qi in Zhouyuan (the Plains of Zhou). From then on, they were known as the Zhou tribe.
Establishment of the Dynasty: Gugong’s great-grandson, Ji Fa (King Wu), overthrew the Shang Dynasty and established the Zhou Dynasty (historically known as the Western Zhou).
The Eastern Zhou and the Ru Nan Branch: Following the reign of King Ping of Zhou in 770 BC, the capital was moved to Luoyang (marking the beginning of the Eastern Zhou). King Ping had a son named Ji Lie, who was enfeoffed in Runan. By the 18th generation of his descendants, a man named Yong officially adopted Zhou as his surname.
The Fall of the Dynasty: During the reign of King Nan of Zhou (the 24th king after King Ping), the state was conquered by the State of Qin in 256 BC. The royal family, led by King Nan, was relocated to Dangu (present-day Ruzhou), where they and their descendants took the name of their fallen dynasty as their surname.
