Huang represents the color of the earth and is one of the five primary colors (Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth). It was the tribal title of Xuanyuan, the Yellow Emperor. The character "Huang" also refers to pendant jade and serves as a synonym for gold and the imperial golden seal. Furthermore, it is a shorthand for "Emperor," representing supreme authority and unparalleled honor.
The surname originates from the Huang-yi people, who were descendants of Bo Yi:
The State of Huang: During the transition between the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, the descendants established the State of Huang in present-day Huangchuan, Henan. Because the Zhou court granted them the noble rank of "Viscount," it was also known as the State of Huangzi.
Defiance Against Chu: During the Spring and Autumn period, while the State of Chu dominated the south, only the States of Huang and Sui dared to resist them.
Fall of the State: In 648 BC, the State of Huang was eventually annexed by the State of Chu. Following the fall of their nation, the people of Huang adopted the name of their state as their surname to honor their heritage.
