The mid-19th century saw a significant wave of Chinese immigration to the U.S., driven by economic opportunities that led to the establishment of Chinatowns across the nation: Emerged in the Western United States, including California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. Following the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, Chinatowns appeared in railway towns such as St. Louis, Chicago, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and Butte. Major East Coast cities like New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Providence, and Baltimore saw the rise of Chinese communities. Furthermore, following the Emancipation Proclamation, states in the South—such as Arkansas, Louisiana, and Georgia—began to employ Chinese immigrants, forming pockets of Chinese settlements.
History bears witness to the achievements of our ancestors, while cultural inheritance defines the depth of future generations. For over 200 years, our forebears have left behind a legacy of perseverance—marked by blood, sweat, and tears—as well as invaluable cultural relics and historical records within Chinatowns across the country. The Chinatown History and Culture Association is dedicated to further exploring, documenting, and safeguarding these precious records and artifacts, ensuring that the history of our Chinatowns is passed down from generation to generation.
